In the band and block brake as shown in fig below, the band is lined with 12 blocks each of which subtends an angle of 15° at the center of the rotating drum. The thickness of block is 75 mm and diameter of drum is 850 mm. When the brake is in action, the greatest and least tensions in the brake strap are T1 and T2, then derive the relation of ratio between tensions. Also calculate the least force required at C for the block to absorb 250kW at 260 rpm. The coefficient of friction for brake is 0.4. All dimensions are in mm.

A double riveted double cover butt joint is made of 12mm thick plates. By considering suitable rivet diameter (use Unwin’s formula) for this joint find the efficiency of joint. Also draw the sketch of the riveted joint. Take shear and crushing strength for rivet material as 80 MPa and 160 MPa and tearing strength of plate material is 115 MPa. (pmax = 3.5t+ 41.28 mm)
